Higashihiroshima City

Higashihiroshima City is a city located in the central-southern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It has experienced relatively rapid population growth in recent years within the prefecture. Named "Higashihiroshima" (meaning "East Hiroshima") because it lies to the east of Hiroshima City, its main urban area is situated in the Saijo Basin. Due to its large diurnal temperature variations and favorable environment for brewing, the city is home to numerous sake breweries.

Higashihiroshima City boasts numerous higher education institutions, including Hiroshima University, Hiroshima International University, Elisabeth University of Music, and Kinki University. There are also many tourist attractions here, such as the Aki Kokubunji Ruins, Kagamiyama Castle Ruins, Sake Storage Street, Mikinokuni Water Source, Chikurin-ji Temple, Fukusho-ji Temple, Heiwa-ji Temple, the Former Kihara Family Residence, Soja Castle Ruins, Iwakura Castle Ruins, Seiryu Falls, Ayame Falls, and the Hachihommatsu Eighty-Eight Stone Buddhas. Notable festivals include the Akitagun Oyster Festival, Mikami Shrine Gion Festival, Mitsugi Gion Festival, Akitagun Sumiyoshi Festival Fireworks Display, Saijo Bon Odori Festival, Toyosaka Navel Festival, Sake Festival, and the Festival of Fire and Food.

The sake brewed in the Saijo area, the city center of Higashihiroshima, is famous for its soft-water brewing method invented by Kuheiji Mibu. An annual "Sake Festival" is held every October. In 1995, the National Tax Agency Brewing Research Institute (now the independent administrative agency National Research Institute of Brewing) relocated from Tokyo to this area, further enhancing the region's brewing identity.
