Kure

Kure is a city located in the southwestern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, bordering the Seto Inland Sea. It has been a naval stronghold since ancient times, was elevated to a special ordinance city in 2000, and is now also a designated public health center ordinance city. It is home to Hiroshima University of Arts and Sciences.

The Kure Maritime Museum, which opened in 2005, is affectionately nicknamed the “Yamato Museum” due to the 1/10 scale model of the battleship Yamato displayed in its main hall. The exhibits include the history of Kure, large-scale artifacts, and shipbuilding technology. In addition, other noteworthy sites include the Mihonoseki Omotejinya Art & Culture Hall, Nyuko-yama Park, the Nyuko-yama Memorial Hall (former Kure Naval District Commander’s Official Residence), the Maritime Self-Defense Force Kure District Headquarters building, and Nagasako Park (former naval cemetery).
