Onomichi City is a city located in the southeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, situated midway between Okayama City and Hiroshima City. Since ancient times, it has flourished as a port city. The mountains stretching behind approach the curved, tranquil coastline of the Onomichi Channel like a canal, and the slopes at the foot of the mountains are lined with historic temples and farmsteads, earning it the beautiful reputation of the “city of slopes.”

Onomichi City has historically been away from the ravages of war and is also a cultural heritage city boasting long-established famous temples. There are numerous sites where you can experience the essence of Japan, such as temples and shrines. Senkoji Park, headlined by Senkoji Temple, also features stone monuments inscribed with works by many renowned poets. In spring, the park’s 1,500 cherry blossom trees bloom in unison, creating what is known as a “sea of cherry blossoms.” If you have time to spare, don’t miss Tenningji Temple, Jōdoji Temple, Seigosan Temple, Saigokuji Temple, Koshoji Temple, Inno Shima Suigun Castle (Murakami Pirates Museum), Honinbō Shūsaku Go Memorial Museum, Ohama Zaki Lighthouse, Bitchū Fukuyama Domain Office Ruins, and the Sea Creatures Park Ruins.
