Old Iwasaki Residence Garden

The Old Iwasaki Residence Garden is located in Taitō Ward, Tokyo, covering an area of 17,000 square meters. Historically, it had 20 luxurious buildings with a total floor space exceeding 49,000 square meters. Part of this historical garden follows the style of daimyo gardens, featuring a grass garden that preserves the early form of modern gardens, blending Japanese and Western aesthetics in a remarkably balanced layout that has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

After World War II, the Old Iwasaki Residence Garden was used as the Judicial Training Institute for the Supreme Court. In 1994, it was taken over by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and since 2001 has been managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Despite the passage of time and many changes, today the garden retains only three main structures: the Western-Style Residence, the Japanese-Style Building, and the Billiards House. Yet visitors can still sense its former grandeur. The Western-Style Residence is an authentic European-style mansion built in the English Renaissance style, with two wooden floors and a basement, exquisitely decorated to convey an air of nobility. The Japanese-Style Building features a shoin-zukuri design and is purely traditional Japanese architecture. The Billiards House adopts the style of a Swiss mountain chalet, offering a refreshing, natural atmosphere.
