Ueno Tōshō-gū

Tōshō-gū is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founding shōgun of the last feudal military government in Japan—the Edo Shogunate. After coming to power, Ieyasu conquered various feudal domains by force and unified the entire country. After his death, he was revered as the guardian deity of the Edo Shogunate, known as Tōshō Daigongen, and the shrine built in his honor is called Tōshō-gū. There are many Tōshō-gū shrines across Japan, among which the most famous is the Nikkō Tōshō-gū located in Nikkō City, Tochigi Prefecture, which also serves as the head shrine for all Tōshō-gū shrines.

Ueno Tōshō-gū is located within the scenic Ueno Park, a gift from the nation. The shrine grounds are shaded by ancient towering trees, complemented by exquisitely carved buildings that exude solemnity and elegance, attracting visitors from near and far. At the entrance stands a stone torii gate known as the Myōjin torii. Along the approach are 200 stone lanterns and 50 bronze lanterns lining both sides. The site features numerous historic and majestic structures, including the main hall, worship hall, and karamon gate, among which the torii gate, main hall, and karamon gate have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. After visiting Ueno Tōshō-gū, tourists may also enjoy exploring Ueno Park, which offers plenty more to see and experience.
