Taiwan Provincial City God Temple

Taiwan Provincial City God Temple is a temple primarily dedicated to the City God, located on Wuchang Street in Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan. Originally, there was a temple in the Hankou Street area of Taipei City, enshrining the Taipei Prefecture City God and known as the “Taipei Prefecture City God Temple.” During the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan, the temple was demolished for certain reasons. The worshippers then moved the statue of the “Taipei Prefecture City God” to Songshan for worship, where they established the Songshan Zhaoming Temple. On August 8, 2002, it was officially renamed back to “Taipei Prefecture City God Temple” with approval from the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Taipei City Government.

After the end of World War II, worshippers in Taipei built a new temple on Wuchang Street, naming it the “Taiwan Provincial City God Temple.” In addition to enshrining the “Provincial City God Weiling Gong,” the temple also worships deities such as Guanyin and Ji Gong. Since the Taipei Prefecture no longer existed at the time and the largest administrative division in Taiwan was the Taiwan Province—while Taipei was the most prominent region in the province—the status of the City God was designated as that of a “Provincial City God.” Hence, the temple was named the Taiwan Provincial City God Temple, and its main deity is still respectfully referred to as Weiling Gong.

The Taiwan Provincial City God Temple celebrates the birthday of Weiling Gong, the City God, on October 25th. Every year on this occasion, the temple, in conjunction with the government’s celebration of Taiwan Retrocession Day, holds a divine procession and parade. Following local Taiwanese religious customs, the temple also conducts activities such as prayer for the Dipper Stars, lighting of the Enlightenment Lanterns, and the Water Repentance ritual, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
