Jingcheng Pear Garden is located in the Pingfang area of Chaoyang District, at the southeast corner of the intersection between Airport Expressway Second Channel and East Fifth Ring Road. It enjoys convenient transportation and a prime location. The park covers an area

of 930 mu. Originally an ecological pear orchard and nursery featuring Fengshui pears, it underwent a complete upgrade and transformation in 2007 as part of Beijing’s “Suburban Park Loop” initiative. It officially opened to the public on the eve of May Day in 2008, becoming one of the free-access suburban parks.

Themed around pear trees and pear culture, Jingcheng Pear Garden highlights the spring scenery described as “pear blossoms blooming like snow on every branch, thousands of trees blanketed in white.” The park features eight scenic spots: Pear Blossom Square, Shaded Tree Corridor, Pear Blossom Lawn, Pear Garden Isle, Pear Blossom Valley, Pear Garden Clear Snow, Pear Garden Stage, and Pear Garden Villa.

The park is equipped with facilities such as basketball courts, small soccer fields, fitness equipment areas, children’s play zones, and a sunken cultural square, providing spaces for cultural and sports activities for local residents. Emphasizing ecological sustainability, the park features a dry river that collects and stores rainwater during the wet season in a rainwater collection lake, helping to replenish groundwater. This stormwater management project helps alleviate the annual decline in Beijing’s groundwater levels.

With its rich plant landscape and well-developed infrastructure, Jingcheng Pear Garden offers a comfortable, natural, and vibrant recreational space. It serves as a comprehensive leisure park that integrates daily fitness and relaxation with weekend leisure activities, combining pear garden culture, modern healthy living concepts, and a suburban atmosphere. Pear Blossom Square is home to six ancient pear trees with trunks over 40 cm in diameter and heights of seven meters, aged between 80 to 100 years, with the oldest exceeding a century. These trees consist of two varieties: sour pears and snow pears. In spring, their profuse blossoms create a magnificent sight and serve as the park’s iconic landscape. A large white stone in front of the trees is inscribed with the park’s name, serving as a focal point of Pear Blossom Square. According to the Tang Yu Lu, “When pear blossoms bloom in Luoyang, people often bring wine to enjoy beneath them, saying ‘to wash the pear blossoms’ or even buying the trees.” Pear blossoms were especially popular as hair ornaments. At the time, Prince Ruyang Mu Qingshu wrote a poem admiring the blossoms: “Drinking beneath the pear trees, pear blossoms adorn our hair. Fragrance wafts from jade-like boughs, white petals float over golden cups.” The term “Pear Garden” originated in the Tang Dynasty as the official institution for training performers in song, dance, music, and acrobatics. Over time, it became synonymous with traditional Chinese opera. Within Pear Garden Isle, five sets of flower stands symbolize the five role types in opera: sheng (male), dan (female), jing (painted face), mo (supporting male), and chou (clown), serving as practice and gathering spots for opera enthusiasts. The northwest section of the park will soon feature the Beijing Grand Opera House and an Opera Museum, complementing the park’s theme and enriching its cultural significance.

The completion of Jingcheng Pear Garden represents a commendable achievement for the Pingfang area in implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development and accelerating environmental improvements. It is also a meaningful step in addressing public welfare and building a harmonious society, as well as a heartfelt gift from local residents in welcoming and supporting the Olympic Games, contributing to the successful hosting of the Beijing Olympics. Since its opening, the park has enriched public cultural life, enhanced urban functionality, and provided a serene environment where citizens can cultivate their minds and spirits amid beautiful natural surroundings, creating a harmonious scene where humanity and nature coexist in unity.
