Tung Lung Chau

Tung Lung Chau, also known as Tung Lung Island, is the southernmost island in Hong Kong’s Sai Kung District. It lies south of Clear Water Bay Peninsula and southeast of Hong Kong Island’s Sai Wan, covering an area of 2.42 square kilometers. Since it is situated south of Fat Tong Mun, the island was historically called Nam Fat Tong or Nam Tong Chau. The Nam Tong Hoi Hap (now often spelled as Lam Tong Hoi) to the southwest of the island also derives its name from Nam Tong Chau. On the other hand, the channel to its north is called Fat Tong Mun, and due to land reclamation, Fat Tong Chau (North Fat Tong), which lies north of Fat Tong Mun, has now merged with Clear Water Bay Peninsula.

The island features Qing Dynasty-era cannons, ancient cliff carvings, and stunning scenery, making it an excellent spot to watch the sunrise over the sea. Tung Lung Chau was historically called Nam Fat Tong or Nam Tong Chau because it lies south of Fat Tong Mun. The Nam Tong Hoi Hap (now more commonly written as Lam Tong Hoi) to the southwest of the island also takes its name from Nam Tong Chau. Meanwhile, the channel to its north is called Fat Tong Mun, but Fat Tong Chau (North Fat Tong), which lies north of Fat Tong Mun, has been connected to Clear Water Bay Peninsula. Tung Lung Chau is home to the Tung Lung Fort Special Area, which includes the ruins of Tung Lung Fort, and is also one of the designated camping sites under the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, accommodating at least seven camping units.
