Weekend Getaway: White Sandy Beaches & Azure Coastlines – Go Camping in Sai Kung, Hong Kong

For “office workers” who can’t travel abroad often but still want a relaxing trip on weekends, this time we headed to the Lung Kwu Tung Pok camping site in Sai Kung. To get to Lung Kwu Tung Pok, you might consider taking a taxi from Sai Kung – the fare is about HKD110. This time we chose the beginner-friendly trail, which is very short, taking only around half an hour to walk along Section 2 of the MacLehose Trail (there are ten sections in total) to reach our camping spot.

There’s only one road leading directly to the destination, so there’s no fear of getting lost. Along the way, you can enjoy views of High Island Reservoir, currently Hong Kong’s largest reservoir with a capacity of 281 million cubic meters. Don’t miss the rocks along the path either – this area is part of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, featuring nearby rhyolitic volcanic rocks that have existed for over 140 million years.

Along the route, you can see how years of wave impact and erosion have cut some small islands into isolated islets.

Once there was a massive volcano here. After multiple eruptions, the volcanic ash and lava inside the crater gradually cooled, slowly forming hexagonal volcanic rock columns. Before long, we arrived at the camping site, located just below the Christian Mutual Aid Centre (a drug rehabilitation center).

As long as you find a clear, flat area, you can start setting up camp, and soon you’ll see the basic structure taking shape.

Build a stone pile with small rocks, add some barbecue charcoal, and you’re ready to start grilling.

The beach ahead has crystal-clear water and fine sand – a perfect spot for swimming and splashing around. Occasionally, you’ll also see yachts moored here.

When leaving, make sure to pack up your own belongings and remember to clean up all trash. Since we’ve enjoyed the Earth’s resources, we should also give back. Then just retrace your steps along the way you came.

- The camping site is in a suburban area where phone signals may be weak, so it’s best to inform friends or family beforehand.
