Sheung Yiu Folk Museum

Sheung Yiu Folk Museum is located in the scenic Sai Kung Country Park, covering an area of 500 square metres. It is a Hakka village house built in the late 19th century. The Sheung Yiu Village and a nearby lime kiln were declared monuments in 1981 and reopened as a museum in 1984 after restoration.

Sheung Yiu Folk Museum is a branch of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The original site was a Hakka village called Sheung Yiu Village, built in the late 19th century by the Wong clan originally from Huangcaoling, Bao’an County, Guangdong. The founding settler was Wong Fat-sing and his several brothers. The entire museum features the original houses, a spacious drying terrace, and other ancillary structures, displaying a variety of Hakka farming tools and household items, accompanied by photos and illustrations that recreate the former rural life of Sheung Yiu. The restored Hakka village includes houses, a spacious drying terrace, and other supporting architectural elements such as a kitchen, cattle shed, pigsty, and a six-metre-high watchtower. The museum displays simple furniture and farming tools used by the Hakka people at the time, along with photos and captions, bringing back the traditional rural atmosphere of Sheung Yiu.
