Tin Hau Ancient Temple and Hietian Palace in Sai Kung Market

Tin Hau Ancient Temple and Hietian Palace in Sai Kung Market are located on Po On Road, Sai Kung Town Centre, Sai Kung District, New Territories, Hong Kong. The Tin Hau Temple and Hietian Palace are adjacent to each other but were not built at the same time. They are managed by the “Sai Kung Kaifong Committee” and are listed as a Grade III historic building. This temple complex is not only a religious hub for the Sai Kung area but also the birthplace of the region’s politics, economy, rural affairs, education, and healthcare.

Tin Hau Temple. The exact year of construction of the Tin Hau Temple is unknown, but it is said to have a history of over 100 years. It has been renovated in 1965 and 1993. The temple’s entrance plaque reads “Tin Hau Ancient Temple,” and the couplet on its sides reads: “Sacred traces from Putian bring grace to the land of Sai Kung; Compassionate clouds over the harbor bless the hills of Gangzhou.”

Hietian Palace, also known as “Guandi Ancient Temple,” was originally located where the “Dun Chang” site in Sai Kung Market now stands — the current site of the Sai Kung Clinic. Due to long-term neglect, local residents decided to raise funds for its restoration. In 1916 (the fifth year of the Republic of China), the temple was relocated to its present site and combined with the “Tin Hau Ancient Temple.” The entrance plaque of “Hietian Palace” reads “Hietian Dadi” (Grand Emperor of Hietian), and the couplet on its sides was written by Chen Botao, a Guangdong provincial scholar: “Loyal to Han with one heart, embodying millennia of righteousness; gaze with hollow eyes, beholding the eternal model of emperors and heavens.”
