Xinglong Park
Xinglong Park (originally named Xinglong Forest Grove) was initially built on February 22, 1992, completed in December 1995, covering a total area of 1,017 mu. It features eight small hills and a 45-mu artificial lake, with a total investment of approximately 30 million yuan. The white marble bridge over the lake has become a central landscape. On the west side of the lake is a waterside pavilion, while on the southern peak stands an octagonal double-eaved pavilion, and on the northern lakeside is the Moon-Embracing Pavilion. The park houses over 20,000 various trees and shrubs, forming the initial Xinglong Forest Grove.
In March 2002, it was approved as a first-class municipal park by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry. The park is located at No. 8A Xinglongzhuang, Gaobeidian Area, Chaoyang District, Beijing, stretching from north to south between the eastern extension of East Chang’an Avenue (Jingtong Road) and Chaoyang Road. The main western gate is designed as a traditional Chinese-style ancient gate; the southern gate has been newly renovated into an ancient-style mountain gate; and a new garden-style Chinese gate has been constructed at the northern entrance. With the completion of the management building next to the northern gate, it has become one of the representative style landmarks within Xinglong Park.
On March 12, 1995, former Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Zhang Zhen and Chief of the General Staff led 58 generals to the park for tree planting. Zhang Zhen and the Chief planted two tall Huashan pines and three white-bark pines. A total of over 1,200 trees were planted during this event, including junipers, scholar trees, koelreuterias, willows, toon trees, and poplars, marking the first major tree-planting campaign of Beijing’s spring season. This also left behind a meaningful “Generals’ Forest” in Xinglong Park.
In April 2007, in line with the requirements of the Chaoyang District Government and taking advantage of the Olympic opportunity along with the construction of green buffer zones, the “Park Ring” project was initiated to develop a suburban park. New constructions included the western gate square, the western gate landscape wall, the lake island corridor, and a suspension bridge. Over 3,000 meters of various park paths were newly built or upgraded. Xinglong Lake was further renovated with the addition of a stone boat. The park’s scenic spots, tree plantings, and supporting facilities were further enhanced. A monument to the Generals’ Forest was also established in the annals of history. The park now boasts over 100 common garden plant species and more than 30,000 various trees and shrubs.
Xinglong Park is a suburban forest park primarily focused on ecological conservation and based on tree preservation. With humanized management, it provides residents and visitors with a quality space for leisure, walking, and fitness. Its elegant environment allows visitors to experience the freshness of nature and achieve physical and mental wellness. Xinglong Park is currently an open, free-entry public park.
