St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Hong Kong

St. Stephen’s Church (English: St. Stephen's Parish) is a Catholic church in the Southwestern New Territories Deanery of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong. It is located at 14 Wing Fong Road, Lower Kwai Chung, New Territories, and was completed in 1980.

History

St. Stephen’s Catholic Church was completed on December 26, 1980. The parish is dedicated to Saint Stephen as its patron saint and was consecrated by the then Bishop of Hong Kong, John Wu Cheng-chung (late Cardinal). Before the church was built, Father Manuel Fonseca moved from Tsuen Wan to Kwai Fong and set up a pastoral center at Yuk Wan House. Mass centers were also opened at the Maryknoll Sisters’ Siu Ming Catholic Secondary School in Lai King and Kwai Shing. However, over the past decade, the number of clergy has continuously declined, and along with the Diocese of Hong Kong’s administrative reforms for mass centers and chapels, the parish structure changed from 1999 to become the “St. Stephen Pastoral Committee and Ng Kwok Shing Pastoral Committee.” The parish council is formed by selecting four members from each of the two pastoral committees, totaling eight members.

Patron Saint

Saint Stephen is the first martyr of the Church. At the time of his martyrdom, Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit, had the face of an angel, looked up to heaven, proclaimed what he saw, and knelt down to pray, asking the Lord to receive his soul and forgive those who were stoning him (“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”; “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”). He was ultimately stoned to death by the Jews.

Sunday Masses: 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM (Cantonese) on Sundays; Vigil Mass: 8:00 PM on Saturday (Cantonese); Weekday Masses: 7:15 AM (Cantonese) from Monday to Friday.

Sundays: 7:15 AM – 5:00 PM; Mondays to Saturdays: 6:45 AM – 5:30 PM; Public Holidays: 6:45 AM – 9:00 PM.
