Hong Kong Chunjun Temple

Chunjun Temple is a temple in Hong Kong, located on Tsing Yi Island in the New Territories, dedicated to Wu Ganghou Chunjun (Chunjun Dadi). This Chunjun Temple is the only surviving one of its kind in the Hong Kong region. The temple was built around the 1900s, originally situated on Tsing Yi Main Street. Due to the development of the Tsing Yi New Town, the temple was first relocated in 1970 to the side of Tsing Yi Heung Sze Wui Road, and then moved again in 1986 to its current location on Maple Tree Bay Road.

Chunjun’s original name was Wu Ganghou, a native of Guangdong during the Southern Song Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Lizong of Song, he was honored for assisting the imperial court in combating pirates along the Guangdong coast. After his death, he was posthumously titled Chunjun Dadi. Temples were built in his honor across Guangdong at the time. The temple plaque features the clay-sculpted characters “Chunjun Ancient Temple,” and the couplet on the door reads: “Majestic over Linggang, revered across the seas; divine over the imperial gate, virtues sheltering the heavens.” On the left is the “Tai Sui Palace.” Chunjun’s birthday is celebrated on the 15th day of the third lunar month, with traditional Cantonese opera performances held in the football field next to Tsing Yi Complex Building opposite the temple.
