Guide This is the best spot to take in a panoramic view of Kanas Lake. Climbing up to the Fish-Watching Pavilion has also become a must-do for every visitor to Kanas. There are two ways to get to the pavilion: one is by car, taking a detour around the back of the mountain to the mountainside; the other is to hike up the spiral stone steps specifically built for climbers from the front side of the mountain at the lake’s outlet. Highlights First, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Kanas Lake, with three-quarters of its surface spread out before you. Second, you can take in the beautiful mountain scenery surrounding the lake — layers of peaks, green mountain ridges reflected on the water, and billowing waves amid drifting clouds. Third, if you look northward, you can clearly see the highest peak of the Altai Mountains, Friendship Peak (4,374 meters), towering among the mountain ranges, as the Kanas Lake waters wind their way northward from south and are blocked by the mountains. Introduction The Fish-Watching Pavilion is located atop Camel Peak on the western shore of Kanas Lake, at an altitude of 2,030 meters and 600 meters above the lake surface. The pavilion was built to allow visitors to observe the legendary “lake monster” of Kanas Lake — commonly referred to as the “big red fish” — from a high vantage point. Although very few people have actually spotted the big red fish, this is the best angle to appreciate the full panorama of Kanas Lake: silver-glittering snow-capped mountains, lush forests, and emerald-green lake waters all stretch out before your eyes. Therefore, climbing up to the Fish-Watching Pavilion has also become a must-do for every visitor to Kanas.
