Friendship Peak

Introduction From the name “Friendship Peak,” we can roughly guess that this is a border mountain. But few might realize that it marks the intersection of four countries: China, Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Friendship Peak is the main peak of the Altai Mountain range, standing at an elevation of 4,374 meters. From the Fish-Watching Pavilion by Kanas Lake, you can gaze at this snow-capped peak. The Friendship Glacier, located on the southwestern slope of Friendship Peak and the Qitun Peak in the headwaters area of the Kanas River, is the largest glacier in the Altai Mountains and also the lowest-altitude valley glacier in China, with its terminus at an elevation of 2,416 meters. The majestic modern glacier and various landforms shaped by intense interactions of ancient glaciers are well-preserved, making it a destination desired by researchers and mountaineering enthusiasts. Friendship Peak is about 70 kilometers from Kanas Lake and can be reached by horseback or on foot.
