White Lake

Introduction  The Kazakh name for White Lake is "Akekel," which means "white." The lake water appears semi-transparent milky white, hence its name. Its formation is due to the inner and outer moraine rock fragments in the upstream glaciers. Through glacial movement, these rocks were crushed and ground into white powder, which was then carried into the river and eventually into the lake, giving the water its distinctive color. White Lake is located on the alpine zone of the western slope of the Biediertao Mountain. It stretches 6,600 meters in length and reaches a maximum width of 1,900 meters, covering an area of 8.5 square kilometers. As a major part of the Kanas Nature Reserve, the lake features a vast surface and deep blue waters. From the Gexujiageda Mountain Pass on the northern shore, one can overlook the entire expanse of White Lake. The surrounding peaks are reflected in the lake, creating a colorful and uniquely beautiful scene.   Transportation  White Lake is situated within the Hemu-Kanas Mongolian Township. It lies 197 kilometers southwest of Burqin County and 54 kilometers northeast of Kanas Village. There are unpaved paths leading to the lake, but no roads are accessible for vehicles—entry is only possible by horseback or on foot.
