Divine Spring

Divine Spring is located in Erpu Township, Turpan City, approximately 28 kilometers west of Turpan. It is accessible via an asphalt road nearby. The spring sits at an elevation of 100 meters.

Divine Spring is located in a gully at the southern foot of the Flaming Mountains, where the water emerges from Cretaceous strata in the form of seepage. The outflow is slow, with a daily discharge of about 0.51 cubic meters, slightly increasing in summer. The water temperature remains relatively stable year-round at around 15 degrees, with visually colorless, transparent, and odorless water that tastes bitter and salty. The total mineralization level reaches 85.9 grams per liter.

The spring water slowly flows down the gully, forming a shallow channel about 2 meters wide and 11.5 meters deep. At the bottom of the gully, large amounts of white salt minerals precipitated from the spring water create a winding white stripe. To the north of the spring’s mouth lies deeply eroded Cretaceous strata composed of grayish-green and reddish-brown interbedded mudstone. These formations are nearly vertical, forming steep-sided gullies over 10 meters deep. The narrow and rugged gullies are hard to navigate, resembling a maze. Hiking up the gully leads to the crest of the Flaming Mountains, where the barren red cliffs are devoid of any vegetation.

Due to its unexpected location, this spring is highly revered by locals. It is believed that washing one’s hair with its water can eliminate dandruff, bathing in it can cure skin diseases, and drinking it may increase the likelihood of having a baby boy. As a result, visitors flock here specifically to collect its water.

Erpu Township: Located 40 kilometers east of downtown Turpan, Erpu Township lies on the southern slope of the Flaming Mountains. It covers a total area of 150 square kilometers. The region receives scarce rainfall, averaging only 16 millimeters per year, while evaporation reaches as high as 3,300 millimeters. The annual frost-free period averages 228 days, making it a typical zone of extreme heat, arid conditions, and hot windswept sands.
