Gaochang Ancient City

Gaochang Ancient City is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Introduction Gaochang Ancient City is rectangular in shape, with a perimeter of 5.4 kilometers, divided into three parts: the outer city, the inner city, and the palace city. The outer wall has a base width of 12 meters and a height of 11.5 meters, built from rammed earth. There are nine city gates in total, with the one in the northwest of the west side being the best preserved. The city was abandoned during the wars in the late 13th century, and most of its buildings disappeared without a trace. Currently, the better-preserved southwest and southeast corners of the outer city retain two temple ruins. In the center of the northern part of the inner city stands an irregular square small fortress, locally called the “Khan’s Fortress.” In 1961, Gaochang Ancient City was listed as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. Transportation It is located 40 kilometers east of the urban area and can be reached by tourist bus.
