Desert Botanical Garden

The Desert Botanical Garden is located 9 kilometers south of Turpan City, situated in the wind-eroded sandy area at the heart of the basin, covering an area of 40 hectares.

The Turpan Desert Botanical Garden, lying approximately 95 meters below sea level on average, is a botanical garden built in the lowest-lying part of the Earth. It is a tourist destination that blends natural landscapes with man-made attractions, and is a desert oasis jointly created by Turpan farmers and scientific workers. The garden has been rated as a national AAA-level scenic spot.

Upon arrival, visitors are first greeted by rows of hedge formed by Nitraria mongolica, followed by a variety of rare plants such as tamarisks, medicinal herbs, mouse melons, calligonums, and licorice species. The diversity here accounts for over 80% of all plant species distributed in China’s desert regions. As an inland arid desert area, the landscape here is truly breathtaking.

In addition, the garden features an artificial lake that shimmers with ripples in spring and summer, surrounded by lush trees that make you feel as if you’ve arrived in the south of the Yangtze River. There is also a karez well near the garden.
