Xihexi Ancient Fossil Site
Introduction Located at the foot of the Helan Mountains, west of Xihexi Bridge in Weizha Township, Hui'nong District, this site covers an area of 600 square meters and was discovered on November 1985. Through excavation and research by experts from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Xihexi ancient fossils date back to 100,000 to 150,000 years ago. So far, fossils of ancient animals such as rhinoceroses, argali, giant deer, tigers, cheetahs, and three-toed horses have been unearthed. It serves as some of the best physical evidence for studying ancient crustal changes, climate shifts, and the extinction of ancient flora and fauna. The site has drawn attention from experts, scholars, the general public, and the media. Reports have been made by the Xinhua News Agency Ningxia Branch, China Central Television, and several local news outlets.
