Guide More than 50 freshwater rivers flow into Qinghai Lake, and the Black Horse River is one of them — hence the name of the Black Horse River Township.     Introduction Located about 220 kilometers west of Xining on the shore of Qinghai Lake, Black Horse River is the starting point of the Qinghai Lake Loop Highway. A 78-kilometer drive along the loop road from here will take you to the famous Bird Island.

The stretch from Black Horse River toward Bird Island is also known as the West Loop Road and is considered the most beautiful section of Qinghai Lake. Many hiking enthusiasts and cycling fans choose to begin their dreamy loop journey around the lake right here at Black Horse River.

The West Loop Road takes on different kinds of beauty in different seasons: in May, wildflowers bloom and flocks of birds fly overhead; in August, vast fields of rapeseed flowers burst into brilliant bloom along the lakeshore; and in October, after the bustle of summer, the grasslands of Black Horse River return to tranquility, and Qinghai Lake reveals its most unadorned beauty. In addition, autumn is the best season for watching the sunrise, and Black Horse River, located on the western shore of the lake, is one of the prime spots to witness the sunrise over Qinghai Lake.

Black Horse River Town: Black Horse River Township is located in the northwest of the county, about 148 kilometers from the county seat. It has a population of 4,000, predominantly Tibetan, accounting for 90% of the total. The area covers 1,000 square kilometers and administers four pastoral committees: Jabulong, Zhihequhu, Wenbadi, and Ranquhu.
