The Ji (Xi) River Scenic Line

The Ji (Xi) River is the mother river of Tianshui. The water is relatively clean, and the riverbanks are lined with green mountains — a rare scenic development in the northwest.

Tianshui is located between two mountains with a river running through it. The Ji River flows from west to east before eventually joining the Wei River. As a child, I didn’t dare venture to the middle of the river; just a few steps from the bank and the water would rise above my waist. Later, the Ji River became smaller and sewage was discharged into it. Around 2007, the Tianshui municipal government built rubber dams in the river to create a lake, forming the Ji River Scenic Line. Along the lakeshore, there are relief sculptures reflecting the historical culture of Tianshui. Flower beds along the banks bloom with different flowers throughout the seasons — cherry blossoms in spring and red plum blossoms in winter. Fish swim in the lake, white geese glide across the water, and in 2014, a fountain was added. On summer weekends, fountain music concerts are held. It has now become a popular spot for local residents to take walks and exercise in the mornings and evenings.
