General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall

The General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism site and a patriotic education base.

The General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall is located atop Huīyīn Mountain, five li south of Qinzhou District. It faces north and sits to the south, with the picturesque Nanguo Temple Scenic Area to its east. The structure follows a traditional Chinese, two-courtyard architectural style. Construction began in November 1994, with an originally planned area of 12 mu. The main memorial pavilion, consisting of seven bays, was completed with a construction area of 277 square meters, along with the completion of some surrounding supporting facilities. In 2009, the Tianshui Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government designated the second phase of the General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall project as a key municipal cultural infrastructure construction project. This project, based on the original memorial pavilion, involved a total investment of 13.5 million yuan, covering a total area of 20 mu. Major constructions included corridors, the memorial pavilion, the mountain gate and side rooms, a screen wall, a quadrangle courtyard, a visitor center, and a cultural exchange center, with a total construction area of 1,926.13 square meters. A new parking lot, road hardening, and plaza paving covered an area of 4,237.88 square meters, and green space totaled 7,175.99 square meters. Currently, the General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall covers an area of 13,540 square meters. It officially opened to the public on June 20, 2012, and offers free admission.

The completed memorial hall consists of three parts, with a total exhibition area of 1,220 square meters:

The first part is the General Deng Baoshan Exhibition Hall. It includes the memorial pavilion, the General Deng Baoshan Exhibition Hall, and corridors. The exhibition area spans 240 square meters. Above the main entrance of the General Deng Baoshan Memorial Pavilion hangs a large plaque inscribed with “General Deng Baoshan Memorial Pavilion” by Comrade Deng Xiaoping. Overlooking the mountains, the entire structure, set against the green mountains and clear waters of the Nanguo Temple Scenic Area, appears simple, elegant, and majestic. Inside the memorial pavilion are displayed replicas of correspondence between Deng Baoshan and figures such as Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Sun Yat-sen, as well as reproductions of calligraphy and paintings collected by Deng. The exhibition content in the General Deng Baoshan Exhibition Hall is divided into four sections: “Aspiring to Serve the Country, Indomitable”; “Upholding National Righteousness, Universally Admired”; “Diligent Governance for the People, Benefiting Hometown”; and “Strategic and Cultured, Exemplary of a Scholar-General,” along with charts, documents, and artifacts. The east side room of the exhibition hall serves as a video screening room, while the west side room functions as a reference and download room for materials. It showcases the glorious life of the renowned patriotic general and loyal friend of the Chinese Communist Party, General Deng Baoshan—his love for his country, pursuit of truth, desire for peace, quest for enlightenment, diligence in governance, care for the people, commitment to facts, and keeping pace with the times.

The second part is the Visitor Reception Center and storage area, with a construction area of 280 square meters.

The third part is the Cultural Exchange Center, a two-story building with traditional Chinese architecture. The first floor houses a calligraphy and painting exhibition room; the second floor contains a lecture hall with an exhibition area of 700 square meters.

Since its opening, the memorial hall has actively collected and organized various materials related to General Deng Baoshan, including artifacts, photos, and books, continuously enriching the exhibition content. It regularly organizes lectures, symposiums, calligraphy exchanges, and international exchange activities. A website has been established to enhance external promotion and expand the memorial’s influence and visibility. Additionally, initiatives such as “Museum-School Collaboration” and “Patriotic Education in Communities” have been implemented to proactively engage with communities and promote cultural co-construction activities.

In recent years, the memorial has emphasized ecological development, carrying out greening and beautification activities around the site. Over 10,000 plants—including moso bamboo, red maple, lilac, and Chinese pine—have been planted across more than 10 mu of land.

In 1995, the General Deng Baoshan Memorial Hall was officially named a Tianshui Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the Tianshui Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. In the same year, it was also designated as a Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government. The memorial hall is surrounded by blooming flowers and lush greenery year-round, nestled among green mountains and clear waters. It has become a major venue in our city for conducting patriotic education activities, notable for its large scale, comprehensive facilities, and elegant environment.
