Dayangjing Park
Dayangjing Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.
Dayangjing Park is located within the jurisdiction of Cuigezhuang Township, Chaoyang District. It borders Beixiaohe River to the north, Jingshun Road to the southeast, the Fifth Ring Road to the northeast, and Wangjing Planning Road to the west. The park covers a total area of 334,000 square meters, including 310,633 square meters of land area (with 261,608 square meters of green space and 49,025 square meters of pathways and paving) and 23,367 square meters of water surface.
Dayangjing is a region with a long history. In fact, Dayangjing predates Beijing by several hundred years. Historical records indicate that the name "Wangjing" (literally "Looking toward the Capital") first appeared during the Liao Dynasty, over a thousand years ago. The Liao Dynasty established its capital in Zhongjing (present-day Ningcheng, Inner Mongolia), while using Youzhou (present-day Beijing) as one of its secondary capitals, referred to as Nanjing (also known as Yanjing). At that time, Wangjing was situated on the vital transportation route from Zhongjing through Gubeikou to Youzhou, making it a strategic military location. A earthen watchtower was once built in the village to monitor enemy movements. To provide lodging and refreshments for envoys traveling between the north and south, the Liao Dynasty constructed a guesthouse in Sunhou, initially called the Sunhou Guesthouse, later renamed the Wangjing Guesthouse. Presumably, Wangjing was more renowned than Sunhou at the time.
Wangjing Platform: Situated on the park’s main hill, which stands 8 meters high, the platform consists of a 4-meter-high stone-clad viewing structure and an eye-catching steel-framed pavilion painted in vibrant Chinese red. This iconic landmark can be seen from the Fifth Ring Road and Jingshi Road. The design of the Wangjing Platform also draws inspiration from the legend behind the area’s name. It is said that when Emperor Qianlong bestowed the name “Wangjing” on this place, he rested at a spot that is roughly where the platform stands today.
Ancient Tree Plaza: This is an important landscape feature in the park, symbolizing the nostalgia of many former residents of Dayangjing Village. During the park’s construction, many large trees from the village were carefully preserved and retained. Although the old houses have been demolished, the cultural heritage of Dayangjing has not disappeared with them but has instead been continued and passed on. Notably, there is an ancient scholar tree at the former entrance of the village, which is now 400 years old. Many elderly residents of Dayangjing return to see this tree under which they played in their childhood. Despite the passage of time, the tree remains sturdy and full of vitality, like a guardian of the land. Today, this majestic tree continues to inspire the resilient people of Pingyu to forge ahead and build upon the past.
Ruyi Lake: Visible from the Wangjing Platform, the lake features clear waters with fountains that spray water droplets, creating a pleasant tinkling sound as they hit the surface. A cascading water wall gently flows down its structure, complemented by lotus flowers swaying in the breeze in the pond and clusters of purple pickerelweed. Together, they create a beautiful lakeside scene. In summer, visitors can relax on the lake’s waterfront platform, enjoying the moonlight and the soothing sounds of water.
Qingxi Waterway: Winding through the park, the Qingxi Waterway features massive granite boulders crossing its stream. Stones are thoughtfully arranged along both banks, while various colorful flowers bloom in the planting beds within the stream. Dense aquatic plants such as cattails, reeds, water irises, and pickerelweed thrive here. The reflections of vegetation shimmer on the water’s surface, while fallen petals drift slowly along the stream. On quiet summer days, it’s common to see children playing and laughing along the waterway, creating a delightful atmosphere full of youthful energy.
Shaded Plaza: Comprising over 100 lushly foliaged Chinese scholar trees arranged in a grand formation, the plaza combines exquisitely colored cement pavement with rustic red brick surfaces. A bronze-colored circular pergola offers a resting spot for visitors. In the peak of summer, perennial flowers such as delphiniums, false dragonheads, yarrows, sedums, and daylilies, along with other blooms, form vibrant flower borders for visitors to enjoy.
Health Trail: Paved with black pebbles and stretching 260 meters in length, the trail provides a barefoot walking experience akin to a foot massage. Its unique appeal attracts many health-conscious individuals. Lined with dense trees, the trail allows exercisers to breathe in the fresh fragrance of foliage, promoting both physical activity and mental rejuvenation.
