Olympic Forest Park

Located at the northern end of Beijing's central axis, Olympic Forest Park is designed with the concept of “an axis leading to nature.” It serves not only as an ecological barrier for the city but also functioned as a leisure retreat for athletes, coaches, and officials during the Olympic Games. After the Olympics, to promote the use of Olympic venues and facilities and provide a recreational urban park for citizens, the forest park underwent brief adjustments and officially opened the southern section to the public free of charge on October 26, 2008. On September 30, 2009, the northern section was opened to the public, achieving the goal of free access throughout the entire park. After the Olympics, the park added a variety of recreational facilities such as boat rides, commercial services, and rides in the northern section to meet the diverse needs of visitors. Olympic Forest Park is now revealing its lush greenery and fragrant blossoms to people from all walks of life.

The park mimics the local ecological environment and natural plant communities of Beijing, enabling the ecosystem to maintain a virtuous cycle and providing visitors with a vast natural green oxygen bar. The park currently has a green space of 478 hectares, water bodies covering 67.7 hectares, over 550,000 trees and shrubs, more than 280 plant species, a green coverage rate of 95.61%, an annual oxygen production of 5,208 tons, an annual absorption of 32,012 kilograms of SO2, and trees that trap approximately 4,731 tons of dust per year. Clusters of trees can reduce noise by 26–43 decibels. The forested area stores about 650,000 cubic meters of water annually, with air humidity 27% higher than other parts of the city. In summer, temperatures are 3–5°C lower, and in winter, 2–4°C higher than in other urban areas. This plays a crucial ecological role in further improving the city’s environment and climate, making it a well-deserved “green lung” of Beijing.
