Dinosaur Dream Island Theme Park
Dinosaur Dream Island Theme Park is a large-scale science and technology theme park co-hosted by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Beijing Hezhong Jiahua Culture Media Co., Ltd. The theme park opened to the public on July 1, 2010, in the core area of the Olympic Park.
Over the past two decades, news of numerous significant discoveries of precious paleontological fossils has emerged across the country, especially those related to dinosaurs, which have garnered exceptional public attention and discussion. In recent years, many provinces and regions in China have begun constructing museums dedicated to paleontology and dinosaurs to enrich the…
cultural and recreational lives of residents. Many of these have become local specialty tourism attractions, such as Changzhou Dinosaur Park and Lufeng Dinosaur Valley.
Looking at both domestic and international successful centers for paleontological science communication, permanent venues and temporary amusement facilities are the two most common models. In China, the dissemination of paleontological knowledge mostly relies on fixed venues, which, due to limitations such as geographic location and surrounding environments, may see certain impacts on the…
entertainment and interactivity of exhibits, as well as a more limited scope of outreach. The temporary amusement model resembles the Disney approach, offering greater diversity, significantly enhanced interactive and entertainment features, and high mobility that allows for wider influence. However, this mode of dissemination requires substantial financial investment from ** or…
enterprises, and as a result, there has been no successful precedent of this model in China yet.
As a professional academic institution dedicated to the research of vertebrate and human evolution, the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is not only an authoritative research body in this field both domestically and internationally but also operates a public science education venue — the China Museum of Paleontology.
It has long been exploring how to convey profound paleontological knowledge to the general public in the most effective and vivid ways. After researching and visiting dinosaur-themed parks both in China and abroad, the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology decided to be the first in China to…
take the plunge: creating China’s first mobile paleontology theme park, and found a capable partner to help realize this dream — Hezhong Jiahua Culture Media Co., Ltd.
Leveraging the institute’s 80-year fossil collection and strong scientific research team, Hezhong Jiahua Culture Media Co., Ltd. utilized its unique creative vision, extensive organizational planning experience, and professional operations team to introduce the concept of large-scale theme parks from overseas. Together with the institute, they co-hosted…
the nation’s first large-scale paleontology-themed park — “Dinosaur Dream Island.”
Dinosaur Dream Island Theme Park features three major exhibition halls: “Back to the Jurassic,” “Glacial Relics,” and “Science Dream.” The “Back to the Jurassic” hall uses high-tech methods such as sound, light, and electricity to bring dinosaurs back to life, guiding visitors through time to the Jurassic era. The “Glacial Relics” hall reconstructs scenes from the Ice Age, showcasing fossils of Ice Age stars such as saber-toothed tigers and mammoths for the first time, immersing visitors in the experience. The “Science Dream” hall will display precious fossil exhibits carefully selected from the institute’s collection of 220,000 fossils…
and includes a professional fossil restoration area where experts from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology carry out fossil restoration work, allowing visitors to observe up close the process of scientific fossil repair.
The “Science Dream” hall will also exhibit uniquely remarkable, national treasure-level fossil rarities, including the horse with the longest face, the world’s smallest dinosaur, the elusive ghost fish long desired by scientists, the graveyard of Mesozoic lizards, feathered dinosaurs, mammals that ate dinosaurs, China’s first bird, and saber teeth from millions…
of years ago. These rare exhibits will appear together for the first time at the Dinosaur Dream Island paleontology theme park, making it highly worthwhile to visit. Additionally, the “Science Dream” hall will launch a major “Star of the Week” event, inviting an authoritative scholar each week to share captivating stories behind the excavation and research of these national treasure fossils.
The theme park has also specially created the Dreamland Park for child visitors, combining entertainment and science education. In Dreamland Park, the “Dream Journey” mini train will take visitors through volcanoes and tropical rainforests, offering an adventurous journey back to prehistoric times. In the “Archaeological Mystery” area,…
visitors can personally dig for a complete T-Rex skeleton fossil in a nearly 300-square-meter simulated fossil excavation zone, experiencing the thrill of scientific exploration.
The theme park also features a fun 3D cinema, which will screen two American sci-fi films never before shown to Chinese audiences during its opening period. The dazzling colors and realistic visuals will immerse every visitor in the dinosaur era hundreds of millions of years ago.
To authentically recreate the environment of the age when dinosaurs lived, the park entrance will feature Asia’s largest mechanical dinosaur, standing 15 meters tall, 35 meters long, and 5 meters wide, serving as the park’s iconic landmark. The park’s scene design is also ingenious, with a nearly 10-meter-tall volcano situated in the core area…
of the park. The exhibition area also provides valuable evidence and clues about dinosaur extinction for visitors to explore. Not far from the volcano is a tropical rainforest landscape area covering approximately 1,000 square meters, where the misting system offers a cool respite for visitors in the summer heat.
Dinosaur Dream Island allows people to engage in entertainment and science interaction within a large theme park, delivering an unprecedented educational and entertaining experience. Visitors will learn about ancient life that once inhabited Earth and naturally develop a humanistic awareness of environmental care and species protection.
This summer, let us escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse ourselves in a park of science, set our curious minds free, experience a time-traveling dinosaur storm, and embark on a thrilling dream-exploring journey.
