Sejila Mountain

Sejila Mountain is located east of Nyingchi County and belongs to the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountain Range. It forms the watershed between the Nyang River basin and the Parlung Tsangpo River, and is crossed by the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. At the mountain pass at an altitude of 4,728 meters, visitors can enjoy the sunrise, sea of clouds, boundless - and gaze at the majestic beauty of Mount Namcha Barwa from afar. Beside Daze Village on the western slope of Sejila Mountain is the Bonri La Mountain, a sacred site of the Bon religion in Tibet and one of the four major sacred mountains of Tibet. Pilgrims come here to circumambulate and worship all year round, coming from all directions. On the tenth day of the eighth month of the Tibetan calendar, a grand mountain circumambulation event called “Nyampra Sus” (meaning to invite the gods and seek treasures) is held.

The most famous feature of Sejila Mountain is the rhododendrons that cover the mountainside. The rhododendron area on Sejila Mountain is vast, with many species, and when in full bloom, the sight is magnificent and spectacular. There are about 850 species of rhododendrons worldwide, around 460 in China, including 170 in Tibet, accounting for one-fifth of the world’s rhododendron varieties. In the Sejila Mountain area of Nyingchi County, rhododendrons are densely distributed at altitudes ranging from 2,900 to 5,300 meters. Calculated in a straight line, the area spans over 1,000 square kilometers, with as many as 25 different species.

The rhododendrons on Sejila Mountain bloom sequentially from the foot to the top of the mountain from mid-April to the end of June. Especially in June, rhododendrons across the entire mountain burst into full bloom—yellow, white, purple, crimson, light red, pink, and more—in a myriad of colors and shapes, creating a mountain and sea of flowers, extremely grand and spectacular.

Climate boundary line: The areas to the northwest such as Bayi Town in the Nyang River basin have a different climate compared to the areas to the southeast such as Nyingchi’s Luding Town. Hence, some say Bayi Town is like “Little North Anhui,” while Luding Town is like “Little Jiangnan” (Tibet’s Jiangnan).
