Shenlong Valley Scenic Area

Shenlong Valley is the largest and best-preserved forest park in the Lüliang Mountains and also in Shanxi Province.

The Shenlong Valley Scenic Area is located 10 kilometers east of Jicui Township, Fangshan County, and 84 kilometers from Lüliang City.

The scenic area spans a total of 70 square kilometers. Here, mountains stretch in all directions, peaks layer upon layer, and forests are lush. The park features a rich diversity of tree species, primarily consisting of Chinese pine, larch, spruce, poplar, and birch, complemented by various shrubs. Notably, larch forests cover large areas within the scenic zone, making it the most extensive such area on the Lüliang Mountains. The mountains are home to a variety of rare birds and wild animals, including the brown eared pheasant—the provincial bird of Shanxi and a Class I nationally protected animal—as well as the Class II protected leopard. There are also hundreds of species of wild medicinal herbs growing in the mountains.

The Shenlong Valley Tourist Scenic Area is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. Major attractions include: one alpine lake—Nanyang Tianchi (Nanyang Sky Lake), one vast grassland—Zhenwu Grassland on Yunding Mountain, four waterfalls—Fairy Waterfall, Icefall, Water Curtain Falls, and White Dragon Waterfall, one ancient temple site—Wenshan Temple Ruins, one shrine—Jiutian Shengmu Temple (Temple of the Heavenly Sacred Mother), one cave—[a specific cave name not provided], “five mountain strongholds”—Fuhu Mountain Stronghold, Renjiayu Zhishan Mountain Stronghold, Wolong Mountain Stronghold, Nanyang Mountain Stronghold, and Xin Yao Mountain Stronghold, “nine unique peaks”—Xiaowen Mountain Main Peak, Heheyan Peak, Yunding Mountain Peak, East Brush Rack Peak, Northwest Rack Peak, Five Dragons Peak, Lion Peak, Ten Thousand Buddhas Peak, and Fairy Peak, and “eighteen valleys.”

Jicui Township: Jicui Township in Fangshan County was formerly known as “Fangshan Township” before the town and township consolidation in 2000. It was renamed to avoid confusion with the county name, which caused inconvenience to visitors, and also to respect historical continuity. Jicui Township is located 15 kilometers north of the county seat, bordering Jiaocheng County to the east, Lin County to the west, Majihui Township to the south, and Mafang Town to the north. The Beichuan River runs from north to south, while Nanyang Gully and Chihong Gully stretch from east to west. The total area is 159.1 square kilometers (239,000 mu).
