Nanyanggou Forest Park

Nanyanggou Forest Park is situated between 111°15′–111°36′ east longitude and 37°53′–38°11′ north latitude within the Lüliang region of Shanxi Province. Dubbed the “Five Great Valleys of the North,” Nanyanggou Forest Park features a total forest vegetation coverage of 57,369 mu on its mountains and a total timber stock of 658,202 cubic meters, making it the largest and best-preserved forest park in Shanxi Province. The park is home to over 100 tree species, predominantly including Chinese pine, poplar, birch, larch, and spruce, along with various shrubs. The area also teems with wildlife, boasting over 1,000 species of rare and precious animals such as the leopard, brown eared-pheasant (a national first-class protected animal), yak, wolf, fox, deer, roe deer, wild boar, and snakes. Additionally, there are around 1,000 varieties of wild medicinal herbs, including over a hundred precious ones such as ginseng, ganoderma, adenophora, polygonatum, codonopsis, poria, scutellaria, astragalus, and bupleurum. Throughout the seasons, the mountains bloom with vibrant wildflowers, offering ever-changing scenery.

Shaped like a long, narrow valley stretching southeast, Nanyanggou Forest Park is flanked by two mountain ranges that resemble a couple lying here with their heads pointing southeast and feet toward the northwest. Nestled within their embrace are six “infants” — Nanyang Mountain Villa and the Five Fortresses of the North (Fuhu Mountain Fortress, Renjiayu Zhijing Mountain Fortress, Wolong Mountain Fortress, Nanyang Mountain Fortress, and Xinyao Mountain Fortress). The waters of Nanyang Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) flow year-round, as if singing a lullaby to these “infants.”
