The school was established in September 1945 under the leadership of Marshal He Long in Wenshui County, originally named the “Shaan-Gan-Ning-Jin-Sui Five-Provinces Joint Defense Army Mobile School in Shanxi,” with Marshal He Long himself serving as the principal. In October 1945, it moved to Dawu Village in Fangshan County. On July 1, 1945, it was renamed “He Long Middle School.” It continued operating until the summer of 1948 when it was expanded into the “Northwest Military and Political University,” after which the campus was relocated southward to Linfen. He Long Middle School was headquartered in Dawu. Branches were also set up in Jingle County (Second Branch) and Shuoxian County (Third Branch).

The original site of the He Long Middle School headquarters in Dawu was formerly the largest temple complex in Dawu Village, known as the “Zihua Palace.” It included over ten structures such as the Hall of the True Martial God, side halls, passageway halls, a theater stage, an offering hall, Taoist living quarters, and the mountain gate, covering an area of approximately 4,000 square meters. It is currently occupied by the Fangshan County Directly-Administered Middle School — He Long Middle School (which regained its original name in 1985) and is relatively well-preserved.

He Long (1896–1969) was a great proletarian revolutionary and military strategist, one of the founders and key leaders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and a marshal of the People’s Republic of China. His original name was He Wenchang, with the courtesy name Yunqing. He was from Sangzhi, Hunan. Over his more than half-century revolutionary career, he made significant contributions to China’s old democratic revolution, new democratic revolution, socialist revolution, and construction, establishing immortal merits.
