Period: Warring States to Jin Dynasty

Address: Nancun, south of Fangshan County

The city site was first built during the Warring States period and successively functioned as the settlement of Gaolang in the Warring States period and the seat of Gaolang County in the Western Han Dynasty. During the Sixteen Kingdoms period, Liu Yuan of Han, who rebelled against the Jin Dynasty, established his capital here and named it Zuoguo City. The site has an irregular shape, measuring approximately 3.5 kilometers from north to south and 2.5 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of nearly 9 million square meters. The Gaolang City of the Warring States period is located in the central part, with a trapezoidal layout. The Gaolang County of the Han Dynasty and the Zuoguo City of the Sixteen Kingdoms period were built as inner and outer layers surrounding the Gaolang City, with the inner city continuing to use the Warring States Gaolang City. The outer city has a trumpet-shaped layout. To strengthen defenses, the eastern part—the Eastern City—was expanded based on the layered city structure. The unique layout of the Nancun City Site provides important insights for studying the history from the Warring States to the Jin Dynasty and the cultural exchanges among various ethnic groups.
