Capital Library
The Capital Library is recognized as a base for science education.
The Capital Library is a large public library under the Beijing municipal government. Located east of Huawei Bridge on the Southeast Third Ring Road, it is open 365 days a year, providing the public with a comprehensive range of cultural information services including literature lending, information consultation, lectures and forums, exhibition exchanges, and cultural leisure. It is an important hub for knowledge and information as well as a key base for the promotion of spiritual civilization in Beijing.
The history of the Capital Library dates back to 1913, evolving from the merger of three libraries: the Beijing Library Branch, the Beijing Popular Library, and the Central Park Reading Room, all of which were initiated with the personal involvement of Mr. Lu Xun. On May 1, 2001, the first phase of the new Capital Library (Building A), as one of Beijing’s four major cultural landmark buildings, officially opened to the public, significantly enhancing service capacity. In 2004, the Beijing Children’s Library moved in, and the integration of the two institutions made the Capital Library’s service offerings even more complete. On September 28, 2012, the second phase of the new Capital Library (Building B) was officially opened to the public. Guided by the philosophy of “open access and comprehensive service,” it has become the most open and integrated public library in China.
