The "Yaoguan Man" Site at Wanrengang

The "Yaoguan Man" Site at Wanrengang is located on the terrace of Wanrengang Rock Shelter behind Xiaohanzhuang Village on the northern side of the Yaoguan Basin. It includes both the upper and lower rock shelters on Wanrengang, with artifacts spread across an area of over 500 square meters. The cultural layer is about 1 meter thick. In late September 1987, a rescue excavation was carried out, during which a complete skull fossil of the "Yaoguan Man" was unearthed from the upper rock shelter, along with over 100 fossil specimens of birds and mammals, more than 100 stone, bone, and antler tools, and two hearths. The animal fossils include species such as birds, macaques, tigers, bears, cattle, deer, muntjacs, musk deer, porcupines, and sheep. Among the stone tools were unifacial cobble hand hammers, perforated ring-shaped tools, chopping tools, pounding tools, scrapers, and pointed tools. The hearths contained dense charcoal fragments, burnt bones, and red burned earth, with ash layers cemented with travertine into hard slabs. The degree of fossil petrification and the characteristics of the stone tools are largely consistent with those found at the Tangzigou Site in Puliang, suggesting a similar age of around 8,000 years. The "Yaoguan Man" skull fossil is the most complete ancient human skull fossil discovered so far at any Paleolithic site in Yunnan, holding significant academic value for the study of human history, biological history, paleogeography, and paleoclimate in Shidian County and the Nujiang River basin.
