Influenced by the monsoon, the winds are stronger in1and2, often reaching Force8or above.11and12are months with weaker winds, making them the best seasons for climbing. Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the southeastern part of Shangri-La tourism area, approximately120kilometers, with a total area21908hectares. The main peak has an elevation of5396meters, while the lowest point is at Jiangbian Administrative Village, only1550meters above sea level, resulting in an elevation difference of3896meters.
The entire reserve4000meters and above consists of steep cliffs, rugged snow-capped peaks, rocky scree fields, and glaciers. Below4000meters, the terrain becomes gentler, with a terraced distribution of landscapes that include subtropical, temperate, cold temperate, and frigid climate zones. The temperature difference between the mountain foot and the summit can reach22.8°C.

Within the Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, there is a three-dimensional distribution of alpine cryofloral zones, alpine meadows, alpine shrubs, fir, spruce, yew, as well as mountain evergreen broad-leaved forest zones. The reserve boasts a rich variety of plant species, including valuable medicinal herbs such as caterpillar fungus, fritillaria, pearl ginseng, gastrodia, and snow lotus. Beautiful flowers such as orchids, lilies, primroses, gentians, and wild peonies are commonly seen. Dense primeval forests are home to Class I protected animals like Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys and wild asses; Class II protected animals such as snow leopards, macaques, red pandas, leopards, musk deer, and forest musk deer; as well as black bears, brown bears, wild boars, raccoon dogs, parrots, and various kinds of thrushes.
Haba Snow Mountain, with its summit perpetually capped in ice and snow, features a towering and solitary main peak surrounded by four smaller peaks. As seasons and weather change, the snowy peaks present ever-shifting vistas—sometimes shrouded in mist, with the "sacred cauldron" peak appearing and disappearing; other times wreathed in drifting clouds that ripple softly among the snow. The reserve contains numerous high-altitude glacial lakes, most situated at elevations above3500meters. Among them, Black Sea, Round Sea, Yellow Sea, and Twin Sea offer the most stunning scenery.
Due to its significant elevation variation, Haba Snow Mountain exhibits distinct vertical alpine climates, with clearly defined zones including subtropical, temperate, cold temperate, and frigid climates. The temperature difference between the mountain base and summit reaches22.8degrees, fostering a vertically stratified ecological system. The area features a three-dimensional arrangement of alpine cryofloral zones, alpine meadows, alpine shrubs, fir, spruce, yew, mountain evergreen broad-leaved forests, and dry-hot valley shrub-grass zones, all rich in plant diversity. Its dense primeval forests are home to many precious animal species. The main peak of Haba Snow Mountain stands at5396meters, perpetually covered in snow and ice. Towering and solitary, it is encircled by four smaller peaks, resembling from afar a silver-glistening crown-like sacred cauldron. With seasonal and weather-induced changes, the snow-capped peaks shift unpredictably—sometimes enshrouded in fog, the sacred cauldron appearing and vanishing; other times wreathed in drifting mists that drift softly between the snowy summits,“as if the white clouds, half-heartedly yet intentionally, breathe in and out with the white snow.”The white snow against the blue sky exudes grandeur infused with boundless delicate beauty.

At an altitude of approximately4700meters, cliffs are draped with icefalls, resembling elegant and pristine musical notes from the snowy mountains. These hanging glaciers are among the southernmost maritime temperate glaciers in China. It is said that the myriad uniquely shaped horn peaks, knife-edge ridges,UU-shaped valleys, and roche moutonnées are remnants of ancient glaciers. Ancient cirques have also melted and accumulated into numerous moraine-dammed lakes, distributed around elevations of4100meters, with Black Sea being the most famous. Named for its ink-black water, Black Sea is deep, mysterious, and offers varying scenery throughout the seasons. Most remarkably, when visitors shout by the lakeside, fine drizzle often begins to fall around the lake, sometimes even turning into a downpour that soaks everyone to the skin.
This mysterious weather-summoning phenomenon adds to the enigmatic allure of Black Sea. The lake teems with a large population of snowfish, commonly known as““baby fish.””When temperatures are suitable, these snowfish gather in dark, swirling rings along the shallow edges of the lake, creating a truly unique spectacle. In addition to snow-capped mountains, lakes, and azaleas, the Haba Snow Mountain scenic area also features many hanging springs and waterfalls. Some are delicate and misty, others powerful and thunderous. For example, Jian Shan Waterfall, about40meters high, boasts abundant flow and majestic presence. Water plunges from the cliff top, turning into a fine mist; under sunlight, the spray sometimes refracts into a rainbow, creating a marvelous scene. The Da Diao Shui Waterfall, nearly200meters high, originates above the snow line and is a seasonal waterfall. Every year from4to9month, as snow melts, glacial water cascades down steep cliffs, forming the exquisite and beautiful Haba Da Diao Shui Waterfall. Towering snow peaks, drifting clouds, and waterfalls bursting through the mist resemble heavenly rivers descending to earth, embodying the grandeur of““waterfalls plunging three thousand feet””.
2Nature Reserve
The Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve is located120kilometers from Zhongdian County. It is a cold-temperate coniferous forest-type nature reserve established to protect the vertically distributed alpine forest landscapes as well as species such as Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, wild asses, civets, and macaques.
The unique climate within the nature reserve has created a vertically stratified distribution of plant zones. Between elevations of4000meters—5000meters, there are alpine cryofruticeta zones, alpine meadows, and alpine shrubs. Between elevations of3000meters—4000meters, mainly fir and spruce forests are found. At elevations of2000—3000meters, there are subalpine coniferous forests and mountain evergreen broad-leaved forests. Below2000meters, the area is dominated by dry-hot river valley shrub and grassland zones.
The reserve boasts a rich variety of plant species. Precious medicinal herbs such as cordyceps, fritillaria, pearl ginseng, gastrodia, and snow lotus found in the reserve are of high quality and medicinal value. Beautiful flowers such as orchids, lilies, primroses, gentians, and wild peonies can be seen everywhere. The dense primeval forests are home to a wide range of rare birds and animals. Class I protected animals include Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys and wild asses; Class II protected animals include snow leopards, macaques, red pandas, leopards, musk deer, and alpine musk deer. Animals with both economic and ornamental value include black bears, wild boars, raccoon dogs, parrots, and various kinds of shrikes. The nature reserve is an ideal place for scientists to conduct research on flora and fauna and also an excellent destination for tourism and sightseeing.

Haba Snow Mountain was formed by the uplift of the Quaternary Alpine–Himalayan tectonic movements.——The entire reserve above4000meters consists of steep cliffs, rugged snow peaks, boulder-strewn moraine fields, and glaciers. Below4000meters, the terrain is relatively gentle, featuring a step-like landform. The climate within the reserve exhibits a distinct vertical stratification, with subtropical, temperate, cold-temperate, and frigid climate zones distributed sequentially from lower to higher altitudes, making it a microcosm of the entire northwest Yunnan climate.
The modern glaciers developed at the summit of Haba Snow Mountain are hanging glaciers, representing the southernmost maritime temperate glaciers in China. To this day, many ancient glacial relics remain, including——pyramidal peaks, arêtes,UU-shaped valleys, and roche moutonnées. Among the most typical are the numerous moraine-dammed lakes formed by ancient glacial meltwater, such as Black Sea, Round Sea, Yellow Sea, and Twin Sea. The lake water varies in color depending on the stones at the bottom, and the water temperature is extremely low, with no algae or fish surviving.
The Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve is a cold-temperate coniferous forest-type nature reserve established to protect the vertically distributed alpine forest landscapes and species such as Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, wild asses, and macaques. Haba Snow Mountain is known as the““Natural Zoo””for its rich biodiversity. The landscape of the nature reserve primarily includes the main peak of Haba Snow Mountain, alpine moraine lakes, rhododendrons, and snow mountain waterfalls. Most of the alpine moraine lakes are located at elevations above3500meters.
The main peak of Haba Snow Mountain remains capped with ice and snow all year round, standing tall and proud. It is surrounded by four smaller peaks, and from a distance, it resembles a silver-glistening royal crown. As seasons and weather change, the snow-capped peaks transform unpredictably—sometimes shrouded in mist, with the crown appearing and disappearing; other times veiled in drifting clouds, with wisps of vapor dancing among the snow.““The white clouds, without intent yet seemingly purposeful, seem to breathe with the white snow.””Visiting Haba Snow Mountain, one of the most unforgettable sights is the rhododendrons. The nature reserve is home to nearly all the rhododendron species found in northwest Yunnan. From the foot to the summit of the mountain, there are nearly
When traveling to Haba Snow Mountain, what leaves the most unforgettable impression is the rhododendrons here. The nature reserve gathers nearly all the rhododendron species found in northwestern Yunnan, with nearly200varieties, accounting for about70%percent of all rhododendron species in Yunnan. They have been hailed by biologists at home and abroad as the““Mother of the World’s Gardens.””The reserve features great variations in altitude and a vertically stratified climate. At different elevations, visitors can admire various types of rhododendrons. When in bloom, the rhododendrons burst forth through the snow, stretching across the mountainside, with white snow and red blossoms complementing each other beautifully. The most remarkable experience is that visitors can literally walk on the flowers, strolling above these floral carpets—a sight commonly referred to as“Flower on the Fly”, is a marvel among the natural landscapes of Haba Snow Mountain.
Within the Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, besides snow-capped peaks, lakes, and rhododendrons, there are also numerous springs and waterfalls. Some are serene and delicately beautiful, flowing in fine, silky streams, while others are fiercely powerful, roaring like thunder—leaving countless visitors spellbound.
3Decoding Haba
For hundreds of millions of years, Haba Snow Mountain has stood quietly, as if time has come to a standstill here. All the worldly vicissitudes in its eyes are but the blink of an eye. Those uniquely shaped horn peaks, arêtes,Ucirques, and roches moutonnées are said to be the remnants left by ancient glaciers, so vivid they look as if they were formed just yesterday.
At an altitude of5396meters, Haba Snow Mountain is shrouded high in the clouds. Below its base lies the deep Haba Grand Canyon. The contrast between the lofty peak and the yawning canyon is nothing short of miraculous—how else could such a terrestrial wonder exist without the touch of divinity?
The surrounding clouds continually gather toward the snow mountain. Occasionally, lightning flashes, illuminating half of the greyish-blue cliffs, hinting at its majesty and mystery. Sometimes, a gap suddenly opens up in the thick fog, and the wind, long confined by the towering walls and dense clouds, rushes upward along the ice ridge, blowing fiercely toward the high heavens. It whirls the dark clouds into chaotic eddies, which crash chaotically against the snow cliffs. At such moments, it seems as though she is foretelling something, hinting at something, where sky and earth meet, and in the swirling light and clouds, it's impossible to tell what is up or down, what is object or self.
The glaciers covering Haba are called by locals“"Sea of Snow,"”located on the northwest slope of the summit at an altitude of about4000meters. Formed by the perennial accumulation of snow and ice collapses, the ice layer is dozens of meters thick and remains frozen year-round. The alpine glacial lakes (Black Sea, Yellow Sea, Bay Sea) are glacial relics formed by ancient cirque lakes from the last Ice Age, representing the only“"Three Parallel Rivers"”region where“Last Glacial Period”glacial relics are found. At such an elevation, the water is extremely clear and cold, devoid of the noise of algae or fish—like a realm beyond the human world. On this rarely-trodden snow mountain, every rock, glacier, and plant seems to have absorbed the essence of nature, exuding a remarkable vitality.
Though not suited for delicate plants, it is surprising that tender rhododendrons bloom vibrantly here. The icy winds from the mountain passes whip their branches, turning them inside out to reveal their pale trunks. In the bitter cold, they link arms, weaving a white net in resistance to death, spreading blossoms across the slopes and covering the alpine frozen desert. This solemn loneliness often captivates city dwellers.
The grass on the mountain grows unusually—not as individual blades or patches, but in rounded clumps, forming little hemispheres that locals call “plateau snow ganoderma.” These ordinary yet extraordinary little beings live calmly in the harsh frozen desert. They require not only tenacious vitality but also a transcendent wisdom. They open the gates of paradise in perilous places—why draw boundaries? Yet somehow, most mountaineers prefer not to camp on the grassy areas by the lake. They say that although the grass is soft and elastic, they worry it might walk away while they sleep.
“White clouds drift without intent, yet seem to merge with the white snow—”The interplay of snow-born clouds and cloud-tossed snow, though not unique to Haba Snow Mountain, is most vividly and exquisitely displayed here. Beside the towering and solitary main peak, clouds swirl in the mist, with the summit appearing and disappearing as if the clouds themselves might take flight. The sun suddenly sinks behind one side of the mountain, then emerges from the other. Sweat that moments ago soaked your back now turns icy cold, clinging to your clothes and body. Due to the dramatic altitude differences, Haba Snow Mountain features distinct vertical alpine climates, nurturing vertically zoned ecological systems. From Hutiaoxia Town at the mountain’s base to the Haba Snow Mountain summit, one traverses subtropical, cool temperate, frigid, and alpine zones. Its special geographical conditions and vertical climate create endlessly changing natural landscapes.
The Great Dangling Waterfall has a significant drop, forming a100-meter-high cascade, though not very wide. The surface of Black Sea is broad, with azure-blue, crystal-clear waters. The stones beneath the lake are also a shade of blue, and ice floats on the surface. In the distance, suspended icefalls glisten dazzlingly in the sunlight.
Yunnan is known as the “Kingdom of Plants,” and more than13000of its plant species are distributed within the Haba Nature Reserve. Dozens of rare animals, such as Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, Himalayan marmots, and red pandas, also roam here. Biologists acclaim Haba Snow Mountain as the“"Mother of the World’s Gardens"”and the“"Natural Zoo."”.
Only when you stand at the foot of the snow mountain and gaze upward can you feel the greatness of the Creator. Only when you stand atop the peak, with all other mountains appearing small beneath you, can you truly grasp the essence of life. The Jinsha River, carving through the Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains, forms the world’s deepest great canyon.——Tiger Leaping Gorge is also renowned for its ruggedness. The snow-capped peaks on both sides rise over3000meters above the river, presenting a breathtakingly dramatic and awe-inspiring sight. Many reefs lie across the river, and when the surging waters crash against them, water columns shoot into the air with deafening roars.

4Snow Mountain Tourism
Haba Snow Mountain tourism mainly focuses on mountaineering and is a destination for seasoned hikers. However, high-altitude climbing is definitely not off-limits to ordinary people. With proper gear and adequate preparation, even non-professionals can scale Haba Snow Mountain, which reaches an elevation of nearly5400meters.
Best Time to Visit Haba Snow Mountain: Due to the influence of monsoons,1and2are months with strong winds, often exceeding8on the Beaufort scale.11and12have gentler winds, making them the best seasons to visit. Roads now extend to the Haba Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, allowing travelers to reach the area by car from the county town in a day. Food and lodging are available in Haba Village. From Haba Village, one can hike to Black Sea, stay at“Dayanfang”, and then proceed from the southeastern side of Haba Snow Mountain's main peak, passing through Round Sea, Twin Lakes, and the Great Hanging Waterfall to Dragon King’s Edge. The area around Haba Snow Mountain is home to ethnic minorities such as Tibetans, Yi, and Naxi, with many uniquely distinctive villages where these communities have lived for generations. Haba Township lies quietly at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain. The township comprises seven or eight natural villages, scattered not far apart along the mountain’s base. Though the residents are primarily Naxi, aside from living in wooden cabins, their customs are not much different from those of the Tibetans. There are also two or three Hui villages in Haba Township. Due to its unique geographical location and natural environment, the area retains an unspoiled simplicity. Clear streams, quaint wooden sheds, and dense primeval forests all around create a serene atmosphere. Even at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain, the main peak often remains shrouded in clouds and mist, as if reluctant to reveal itself. The snow-white Haba is as pure as a maiden, seemingly gazing at you with cold, pristine eyes no matter where you go, evoking both reverence and awe.
Visiting Haba Snow Mountain during the rhododendron blooming season, you’ll be amazed by the sheer variety of rhododendrons found here — over200species, accounting for about70%of all rhododendron types in Yunnan. These flowers display a riot of colors, diverse shapes, and varying petal sizes. When in bloom, the rhododendrons break through the snow and spread across the mountainside, creating a stunning contrast between white snow and red blooms. Most remarkably, visitors can actually walk on the flowers, treading among the blossoms — a local phenomenon known as“"flying over flowers"”, a unique highlight of Haba Snow Mountain.
The terrain resembles a giant staircase. The main peak is perpetually capped with ice and snow, standing majestically, surrounded by four smaller peaks. From a distance, it looks like a silver-bejeweled crown. As seasons and sunlight shift, the snow peaks change unpredictably. If you venture to the edge of Black Sea and shout loudly by the lake, snow or rain may suddenly fall around you, sometimes even triggering a sudden downpour that leaves you astonished. Haba Snow Mountain is truly a miracle crafted by nature for mountaineers — often deceptively calm yet suddenly treacherous, always delivering unexpected thrills. When crossing the icy ridges, the main peak seems just within reach, tempting you to push forward. But this is an illusion. Though it appears only a few kilometers away, the slopes are steep and the rocks erratic, with constantly shifting formations, making the climb extremely challenging. Around the main peak lie at least three large swamps, locally called“Dela”, spanning several3square kilometers in ribbon-like formations. These swamps often leave visitors puzzled — how do they mysteriously support the weight of the towering mountain? The interplay of clouds, snow, the mountain’s hard iron cliffs, loose scree, and swamps creates an ever-shifting, perilously unpredictable landscape. The sharp, cone-like peak of Dajian Mountain juts abruptly from the earth, piercing the sky.
