Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, also called Mengla Botanical Garden, is situated where the Lancang River’s tributary, the Luosuo River, curves sharply, forming a gourd-shaped peninsula surrounded by land—locally known as Gourd Island. The botanical garden is located on this island. Surrounded by mountains, the island retains pristine natural vegetation and features a lush expanse of rare and diverse tropical and subtropical plants—over 3,000 species from both China and abroad. It is China’s largest botanical garden, primarily showcasing tropical rainforests and integrating scientific research, plant germplasm conservation, science education, and eco-tourism.

Transportation

1. Take a bus from Jinghong Bus Station to Mengla or Mengla, get off at Mengla. The fare is 20 RMB and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. (When returning, you can wait directly at the bus stop in front of the garden entrance for the bus back to Jinghong without going back to Mengla Bus Station.)

2. From Kunming or Simao, you can take a bus heading toward Mengla and get off at Xiaomengla Town. It’s a 10-minute walk from Mengla Bus Station to the suspension bridge. Once you cross the bridge after purchasing your ticket, you’ll arrive at the garden’s Hundred Flowers Garden.

Admission Fee

The ticket is 104 RMB per person. Students, minors, and seniors aged 60 to 69 can enjoy a half-price discount of 52 RMB with valid ID. The electric sightseeing vehicle for the western area of the garden is 50 RMB per person, and a full-garden pass for the electric vehicle is 100 RMB per person.

Opening Hours

West Gate: 8:00–18:00 (located 1.5 km from the Kunman Highway Mengla Exit toward Mengla, before reaching Mengla Town)

Suspension Bridge: 7:30–18:30 (located by the river in Mengla Town)

East Gate: All day (the east gate entrance is for service vehicles; guests staying at hotels enter and exit via the east gate)
