Wujiangdu National AA-level Tourist Attraction

The Wujiangdu Scenic Area is located in Wujiang Town, Zunyi County, Guizhou Province, 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Guiyang and 50 kilometers from the historic city of Zunyi. As both a national AA-level attraction and a red tourism site, it combines a wealth of tourism resources with the magnificent, majestic, steep, and picturesque natural scenery, ancient cultural heritage, local customs, and culinary culture, creating a uniquely distinctive comprehensive tourism zone. In 2003, it was rated as a national AA-level tourist attraction. In 2005, the Wujiangdu Power Plant within the scenic area was designated as a National Industrial Tourism Demonstration Site. Moreover, due to its rich red tourism resources, it has now been included in the series of China's 100 Classic Red Tourism Attractions.

The Wujiang River flows through the vast karst region of the Guizhou Plateau, carving out spectacular box-shaped canyons. Towering mountains rise on both banks, with steep shoals and rapid currents, historically regarded as an impassable barrier. The main course of the Wujiang River encircles the southern part of the county, with ancient ferries established along its banks. Wujiangdu was a key junction on the Sichuan-Guizhou Highway, situated in a strategically vital and precipitous location, making it a long-contested military stronghold. The heroic feat of the Central Red Army breaking through the Wujiang barrier during the Long March and advancing toward Zunyi has been recorded in history, making the Wujiang River famous throughout the country.

The Wujiangdu Red Tourism Area includes the cluster of Red Army battle sites at Wujiangdu, the Taizi Platform and Chashanguan Red Army ferry crossings in Shangqi Town, the Nanmudu Red Army ferry, the Dabaoshui Red Army base and battle sites in Sanhe Town, as well as connections to the Jiangjiehe in Weng'an County and the Huilongchang Red Army Wujiang crossing sites downstream. The scenic area spans a total of 200 square kilometers and has been incorporated into the series of China's 100 Classic Red Tourism Attractions. From January to March 1935, during the Long March, the Central Red Army engaged in mobile combat across northern Guizhou, leaving behind a number of important battle sites, relics, and revolutionary artifacts along both banks of the Wujiang River. These hold significant value in the history of the Communist Party of China, military history, and warfare, representing a rich revolutionary cultural heritage. Among the many red tourism destinations nationwide, this area stands out with its unique characteristics.

The National Industrial Tourism Demonstration Site — Wujiangdu Power Plant Wujiangdu Power Plant is the first high-dam power station built in a karst region in China. With a dam height of 165 meters, a total dam crest length of 395.6 meters, and an installed capacity of 1,250 MW, it is the largest hydropower enterprise in the province. The reservoir formed by this project, the Wujiang Reservoir, covers an area of 47.5 square kilometers with a storage capacity of 2.14 billion cubic meters. The reservoir area features wide waters and multiple tributaries, scattered with over sixty scenic spots including Seven Gorges, Nine Rocks, and Thirteen Perilous Shoals.

Wujiang Town: Located in the southern part of Zunyi County, spanning both sides of the Wujiang River. It covers an area of 46 square kilometers, with a population of 22,000, including ethnic groups such as Han and Miao. The town administers 3 neighborhood committees and 10 village committees. In 1949, it was part of Yanglongsi Township in Xifeng County. The area north of the river belonged to Daoja Town in Zunyi County. In 1970, the Wujiang Special Zone was established and came under the jurisdiction of Zunyi County. The special zone was soon abolished, and Wujiang Commune was created. In 1981, Wujiang Town and Wujiang Commune were separated. In 1984, the commune was restructured into a township. In 1992, the town and township were merged to form Wujiang Town.
