Chearerock Red Army Battle Site

The Chearerock Red Army Battle Site is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism destination.

The Chearerock Red Army Battle Site is located 24 kilometers northeast of Weng’an County. The terrain at Chearerock is rugged, with a narrow mountain path resembling the traditional headscarves worn by local villagers, winding along the steep cliffs. The path is only about 0.6 meters wide, so narrow that people have to press against the cliffside to pass — hence the name “Chearerock” (literally “Ear-Rubbing Rock”). On October 1, 1934, the vanguard of the Long March, the Red Sixth Army Corps, broke through the Nationalist blockade in Huangping and Shibing, and entered Laofenzui in Weng’an on October 3. Upon learning that the Red Army was approaching, the Weng’an Local Defense Force was ordered to rush to Chearerock to block their advance using the treacherous terrain. However, the Red Army advanced swiftly and defeated the Weng’an Local Defense Force without firing a single shot, capturing the defense captain and 10 local militiamen, and occupying Chearerock. The next day, the main force of the Red Army passed through Chearerock and reached Houchang. By the end of that year, the First and Ninth Army Corps of the Red First Front Army as well as the Central Military Commission Column also crossed this perilous pass at Chearerock.

Driving directions to the Chearerock Red Army Battle Site: Take a passenger bus from Weng’an County to Jinhao Village, and get off at the Jinhao Village stop. The site is 25 kilometers from Weng’an to Jinhao Village in Yonghe Town. Buses depart from Weng’an to Jinhao Village at 8:40, 11:40, 14:40, and 17:30, with a fare of 7.5 yuan, four trips per day, and a journey time of about one hour. Driving takes approximately 30 minutes.
