Yangping Temple

Yangping Temple is located in Guanghui Village, Xinxing Town, Pengzhou City. Initially built in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, it was the first governing site where Zhang Daoling promoted Taoism and ranks as the foremost among the Twenty-Four Taoist Governing Sites. It holds a significant position in the development and dissemination of Taoist culture.

In 1994, the restoration of Yangping Governing Temple, advocated and directed by Fu Yuantian, then President of the China Taoist Association, had taken initial shape. It symbolizes that both the Quanzhen and Zhengyi sects of Taoism will jointly promote the development of Taoist culture at Yangping Temple and advance the reunification of the motherland.

Yangping Temple derives its name from the mountain, namely Yangping Mountain in Xinxing Town. The Yangping Governing Site encircles the mountain and guards the river, with dense pine and cypress trees forming a canopy, while the Jian River banks mirror each other like gate towers. This place was also once the site of the ancient Shu Kingdom’s first capital, Qushang. To the south of the site lies Danjing Mountain, an exquisite location for meditation and spiritual cultivation. With its serene, tranquil, and ethereal environment, it was praised by Wang Bo as a celestial abode akin to Penglai and a sacred land like Fragrant City. Now, in accordance with the central religious policies, the China Taoist Association has decided to restore Yangping Governing Site and establish a Taoist college. In 1994, the project was personally overseen by Taoist Master Fu Yuantian, then President of the China Taoist Association. It symbolizes that both the Quanzhen and Zhengyi sects of Taoism will jointly promote the development of Taoist culture at Yangping Temple and advance the reunification of the motherland. The now-initially completed Yangping Temple is majestic, mystical, solemn, and dignified. With its unparalleled "immortal charm," it attracts visitors from home and abroad to pay homage, explore Taoist roots, and enjoy sightseeing.
