Pengzhou boasts a large complex of ancient pagodas, most of which are hidden deep within the mountains and dense forests. Among them, the Yunjuyuan Pagoda, Zhengjue Temple Pagoda, and Zhenguosi Pagoda have been listed in the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units. These pagodas were all named after the temples they once belonged to, but after enduring a thousand years of weathering and human destruction, the temples are long gone—only these surviving pagodas remain, their overgrown forms still standing solemnly, silently bearing witness to the magnificent architectural artistry of the Northern Song Dynasty and the heyday of Pengzhou’s history.

Pengzhou Pagodas

The Pengzhou Pagodas are designated as National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Pengzhou is home to a vast array of ancient pagodas, most of which lie concealed within the deep mountains and thick forests. Among them, the Yunjuyuan Pagoda, Zhengjue Temple Pagoda, and Zhenguosi Pagoda are listed in the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units. Originally named after the temples they served, these pagodas have outlived the temples that once surrounded them, their weathered structures now covered in wild grass. Yet they stand majestically, quietly representing the glorious architectural artistry of the Northern Song Dynasty and the flourishing history of Pengzhou.

The Pengzhou Pagodas are located in Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province. There are many pagodas in Pengzhou, among which three have been included in the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units: the Zhengjue Temple Pagoda, Yunjuyuan Temple Pagoda, and Zhenguosi Pagoda. The architecture of the Pengzhou Pagodas is ingeniously designed, emphasizing not only practicality but also decorative style and artistic form. They combine the grand and majestic architectural style of northern Chinese pagodas with the refined and elegant concepts of western Sichuan architecture, serving as typical representatives of ancient Song Dynasty Buddhist temple architecture in the Sichuan region.

In 2006, the Pengzhou Pagodas were listed in the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
