The Ancient City Site of Mangcheng

The Ancient City Site of Mangcheng is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Mangcheng site is located in Group 6, Mangcheng Village, Qingchengshan Town, Dujiangyan City, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It is a Neolithic-era city site dating back approximately 4,500–4,300 years. In 2001, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Dujiangyan. The site is oriented at 10 degrees, roughly parallel to the Bojiang River. The overall city site is about 350 meters long from north to south and approximately 310 meters wide from east to west, covering an area of around 110,000 square meters. The city walls are relatively well-preserved, forming a fairly regular rectangle with both inner and outer walls. The walls are about 5–20 meters wide and 1–3 meters high, with a moat approximately 20 meters wide between the inner and outer walls. Between 1996 and 1999, four excavations were carried out, with a total excavation area of 2,582 square meters. The excavations in 1998 and 1999 were jointly conducted by Chinese and Japanese teams, achieving significant interim results. A large number of pottery fragments and stone tools were unearthed. The pottery includes sand-tempered gray-black pottery, brown pottery, red pottery, and clay-white pottery, with decorative patterns such as cord marks, incised lines, and stamped impressions. Stone artifacts found include axes, adzes, chisels, ceremonial axes (yue), arrowheads, knives, and raw stone materials, along with many pottery spinning whorls. During the 1998 excavation, a complete bamboo-framed earthen wall house foundation was discovered at the southeastern corner of the city site, marking the first confirmation of bamboo-framed earthen walls within the prehistoric city sites of the Chengdu Plain. This provided important physical evidence for studying the shapes and structures of houses in the pre-Qin period on the Chengdu Plain. As a representation of Neolithic culture in the Sichuan Basin, the Mangcheng site holds significant reference value for establishing the archaeological cultural sequence of the region.

Qingchengshan Town: In 2014, with the approval of the People’s Government of Sichuan Province, Dujiangyan City adjusted some of its administrative divisions. Zhipingpu Town and Hongkou Township were abolished, with their administrative regions incorporated into Longchi Town. The administrative area of Cuiyuehu Town was transferred to Qingchengshan Town.
