Tianshi Cave

Tianshi Cave is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Sichuan.

Tianshi Cave of Qingcheng Mountain is situated in Qingcheng Village (the center of Qingcheng Mountain), Qingcheng Town, Dujiangyan City, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The cave was first constructed during the Daye era of the Sui Dynasty (605–618) and originally named Yanching Temple, then changed to Changdao Temple in the Tang Dynasty, Zhaoting Temple in the Song Dynasty, and finally named Tianshi Cave in the Qing Dynasty. The current architecture mainly dates back to the reconstruction during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, covering a land area of 8,132.5 square meters with a building area of 5,749 square meters. The architectural complex faces east and is built along a west-east axis without emphasizing a central line. Based on the terrain and functional requirements, it is divided into four main zones. These are further arranged vertically and horizontally into over ten courtyards of varying sizes, shapes, and atmospheres, all interconnected by winding stone pathways to form a cohesive ancient architectural ensemble.

Tianshi Cave achieves notable accomplishments in terms of site selection, layout planning, spatial treatment, artistic features, and functional design. It holds significant value for the study of the development and evolution of Taoism on Qingcheng Mountain, as well as for research on the construction of Taoist architecture in the region.

Qingcheng Town: In 2014, with the approval of the People’s Government of Sichuan Province, Dujiangyan City adjusted some of its administrative divisions. Zipingpu Town and Hongkou Township were abolished, with their administrative regions merged into Longchi Town. The former administrative area of Cuiyuehu Town was incorporated into Qingcheng Town.
