Zhang Song Ginkgo

The ginkgo from the 1986 version of *Journey to the West* as the Ginseng Fruit Tree

Zhang Song Ginkgo has a history of over 1,700 years. It is said to have been planted by Zhang Song of the ancient Kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms period. To this day, this ancient ginkgo tree is still alive and thriving.

Not far after entering the gate of the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, you’ll see an exceptionally tall ginkgo tree on the right side of the road. A stone nearby is inscribed with the words “Zhang Song Ginkgo.” It is said that this ginkgo tree was planted by Zhang Song during the Three Kingdoms era, making it around 1,800 years old. Even now, it remains lush and vibrant. One of the most noteworthy things about this ginkgo tree is that it was the Ginseng Fruit Tree featured in the classic 1980s version of *Journey to the West*, specifically in the episode “Stealing the Ginseng Fruit.”
