White Horse Spring

White Horse Spring is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

White Horse Spring was first built in the first year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (627 AD), and in the first year of the Qiandao era of the Song Dynasty (1165 AD), the spring pool was honored as the “Marquis of Yuanze” and revered as a sacred spring. Engraved on the huge rocks at the bottom of the spring are a bas-relief of a dragon-horse and the stone-carved characters “Dragon Cave” near the water. The spring maintains a constant temperature of 14°C all year round. Its water surges irregularly—sometimes several times a day, or sometimes not for days. When the spring surges, the pool fills to the brim; when it recedes, the water becomes crystal clear. When the tide rises, it makes a whooshing sound; when it falls, it sounds like horse hooves striking the ground with a “clip-clop.” The rise and fall of the tides are caused by a siphon-like geological phenomenon, making this a unique intermittent spring in China.

Protected Area: East to the highway, west to Yongning Bridge, south to the parking lot, north to 100 meters beyond Qingfeng Pavilion. Area: 2.7 hectares.

Construction Control Zone: East to the mountaintop, west to 30 meters beyond Penzhu Spring, south to Zhao Xinqing’s residence, north to the back mountaintop. Area: 5.2 hectares.
