Category: Tourist Attractions 👁 100 views
Tongjiao Temple is located in Zhenxian Hutong, a small, secluded alley in Dongzhimennei, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It is a well-known Buddhist nunnery in the city. The renovated temple features a three-bay mountain gate, with the Mahavira Hall situated at the western end of the complex. The north and south buildings consist of two floors totaling 40 rooms. Behind the north building are three rooms of Qingtai Lodge. Among the north and south side halls are the Sangharama Hall, the Dining Hall, the Chanting Hall, and others. In front of the temple’s mountain gate lies a park lush with verdant pines, cypresses, exotic flowers, and plants, adding to the serene ambiance of the site. Upon entering the gate, visitors are greeted by the newly restored Mahavira Hall. At the heart of the hall, upon a lotus pedestal, sits the solemn and exquisitely sculpted statue of Amitabha Buddha. Neatly arranged monk quarters flank the main hall, with the Dining Hall positioned to the left front and the Chanting Hall to the right front. The temple also houses two stone steles erected during its 1942 renovation. The main Buddhist structures still standing at Tongjiao Temple include the Mahavira Hall, the Chanting Hall, the Dining Hall, and the nuns’ living quarters. Among these, the Mahavira Hall is particularly unique for housing the “Fifty-Three Visits of Sudhana” painting, which has brought it widespread renown. The temple also preserves two stone inscriptions and a complete set of the Japanese Taishō Tripiṭaka.
