Qiang Folk Museum

The Beichuan Qiang Folk Museum was initially built in May 2006. During the catastrophic “5·12” earthquake in 2008, the museum’s storage facilities were completely destroyed. In October 2009, the Macao Foundation invested 100 million Macanese patacas to rebuild the Beichuan Qiang Folk Museum.

The Beichuan Qiang Folk Museum is divided into three major sections: “History,” “Society,” and “Culture.”

The “History” section narrates the grand historical backdrop of the Qiang people. This section uses various forms such as sculptures, murals, multimedia sand tables, photographs, and texts to reflect historical details of the Qiang people, including “Yan Emperor the Ancestor,” “Yu the Great Taming the Floods,” “Qiang People’s Southern Migration,” “The Qiang-Ga War,” and “The Red Army Passing Through Beichuan.”

The “Society” section systematically explains the Qiang people’s social production, social relations, daily life including food, clothing, housing, and transportation, as well as marriage, funeral customs, and religious beliefs, presenting a comprehensive panorama of Qiang social structure.

The “Culture” section not only showcases intangible cultural heritage elements such as Qiang embroidery, Qiang flute, kouxian (mouth harp), Qiang singing and dancing, folk activities, and folk crafts, but also features a particularly engaging voice-controlled Qiang language learning area.
