Pengji Well

Pengji Well is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Pengji Well is located in Jijingwan Community, Chenggong Working Committee, Daying County. Drilled in March 1956, it is China’s first reference well and currently one of the main natural brine production wells of Jiuda Salt Chemical Company. This well is an important product of New China’s construction period. The original aim of the drilling was to investigate the strata above the Permian system in central Sichuan and the presence of oil and gas. It also aimed to evaluate the structures of the Penglaizhen area and the petroleum potential of central Sichuan. However, during the drilling process, naturally occurring brine with extremely high industrial value was unexpectedly discovered. From its commissioning in 1959 to December 2009, a total of 7.68 million cubic meters of natural gas brine and 170 million cubic meters of associated high-quality natural gas were extracted. It made outstanding contributions to the nation’s chemical industry and the local economic development, earning it the title of “Meritorious Well.” After more than half a century, apart from its production value, Pengji Well has also become a unique industrial cultural heritage site and an important testament to the Chinese people’s efforts to break free from Western economic constraints, overcome poverty, grow stronger, and build a powerful new China. After investigation and evaluation by relevant experts, it has been determined to possess significant historical, artistic, and scientific value.

On October 7, 2019, Pengji Well was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Protected Area: Extending 150 meters southward from Pengji Well to the perimeter wall,

100 meters eastward to the perimeter wall, to the foot of Ma’erpo Hill to the north, and to the perimeter wall of the duty room to the west.

Construction Control Zone: Extending 150 meters southward from the Protected Area to Beiting Highway, 100 meters eastward, to the peak of Ma’erpo Hill to the north, and 100 meters westward.
