White Milk Creek Grottoes

The White Milk Creek Grottoes are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The White Milk Creek Grottoes were carved during the Tang Dynasty. Today, there are 23 niches, 151 statues, 3 stone steles, 1 line-engraved pagoda, and 4 inscriptions, all distributed across four cone-shaped white sandstone rocks. The shapes of the niches include single-layered round niches, double-layered square niches, and outer-square-inner-room niches. The grottoes are richly decorated and showcase exceptional carving craftsmanship. They are considered masterpieces of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, blending elements of religion, painting, architecture, sculpture, music, and clothing. These grottoes provide tangible evidence for the study of Tang Dynasty politics, economy, and culture and hold significant historical research value.

In May 2013, the White Milk Creek Grottoes were listed in the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Protected Area: With the A, B, and C zones of the grottoes centered around Zone A, the western boundary is adjacent to Tonghe River, extending 30 meters eastward, 100 meters northward, and 130 meters southward. Zone D extends 30 meters outward from the grottoes.

Construction Control Area: Extends 30 meters beyond the protected area.
