Yunyang Lijiaba Site

The Yunyang Lijiaba Site is a cultural heritage site protected by Chongqing Municipality.

The Yunyang Lijiaba Site in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of Chongqing is rich in content, spans a long period, covers a large area, and is well-preserved. A significant discovery from the excavation was the clearance of 46 earthen pit tombs dating from the Warring States Period to the Western Han Dynasty. These tombs are all vertical earthen pits, densely distributed and roughly orderly in arrangement.

The burial methods feature certain distinctive characteristics. Some tombs contain human sacrifices and skulls, providing important evidence of the practice of human sacrifice and ritual killing among the Ba people during the Warring States Period. The tomb artifacts are abundant, with a large number of exquisitely crafted bronze weapons of the Ba-Shu culture from the Warring States Period unearthed. Among them, the dragon-serpent pattern spear, the spear fully adorned with cloud-thunder motifs, and the spear with full-body line-engraved relief tiger patterns are all masterpieces of Ba culture, possessing significant academic value. At the same time, the cultural diversity of the burial objects reflects unique cultural and temporal features resulting from the blending and exchange of multiple cultures, offering highly valuable new material for the study of the development, prosperity, integration, and disappearance of Ba culture. As a regional center of the Ba people located in the Pengxi River basin, this site is another major archaeological discovery in the field of Ba culture research following the Fuling Xiaotianxi Site. It holds great significance for studying and revealing the historical face of Ba culture, as well as exploring the connections and differences between Ba-Shu culture and Chu culture.
