Destination Introduction

The former site of the Shaoxing Guild Hall is located at No. 7 Nanbanjie Hutong. It was first built in the sixth year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1826). It was one of Lu Xun’s residences in Beijing.

The buildings of the Shaoxing Guild Hall include the “Yangji Hall,” “Huanwen Cuifu Pavilion,” “Fenghua Bieguan,” “Green Bamboo Boat,” “Jiayin Hall,” “Bushu Study,” “Xian Pavilion,” “Huaixu Studio,” and “Yizhi Nest.”

In May 1912, when Lu Xun first came to Beijing, he stayed in the “Fenghua Bieguan,” where there was a wisteria pool to the east of his room. In May 1916, he moved to live in the “Bushu Study.” Although the “Bushu Study” has now been demolished, only a scholar tree remains. It was here in the “Bushu Study” that he wrote famous novels such as A Madman’s Diary, Kong Yiji, Medicine, and An Incident, as well as important essays such as My Views on Chastity and How We Should Be Fathers, along with 27 essays and over 50 translated works.

Over the years, the Shaoxing Guild Hall has changed beyond recognition, but because Lu Xun once lived and worked here, many people still visit to pay their respects and reflect on his legacy.
